Eligibility Criteria for CPA Australia

Three essential requirements to qualify for CPA membership

You must hold a degree equivalent to an Australian bachelor’s degree (or relevant postgraduate qualification) with at least eight accounting or finance subjects.

You can begin the CPA Program before graduating, but your degree must be officially conferred before achieving full CPA status.

Meet core competency requirements in advanced accounting knowledge areas (usually covered in accredited degrees).

If your degree lacks some areas, complete Foundation exams — self-paced assessments to bridge the gaps.

Exemptions available via Experience-Based Pathway (5+ years professional experience or accredited body designation).

Complete at least 36 months of relevant work experience (can be gained before, during, or after the CPA Program).

Demonstrate at least 10 professional skills across four competency areas.

Internships, volunteer roles, part-time jobs, and backdated experience can count if they meet the criteria.
